Could They Understand

Morgan Spurlock struck gold with his 2004 documentary Super Size Me about him eating nothing but McDonald’s for thirty days straight. I don’t think I could do that, but then again, I’m not a big fan of McDonald’s either. Spurlock’s documentary led to his own TV show 30 Days on FX where a person or himself spends a month in someone else’s shoes. An interesting concept, right?

When it comes to my writing, I rarely let anyone from my family into my world. It feels awkward and I’m not sure they would understand or I could explain it to them. I was watching 30 Days one night and caught myself thinking “Could someone be a writer for an entire month?”. Think about it. Could a family member or friend step into your writing schedule and succeed? My mom might have a chance. She dabbed in poetry a bit, but I’m not so sure about anyone else. Of course, you never know what a person is capable of until they are in a certain situation.

I think it would interesting to see someone who has never written a story/novel in their life try and accomplish a writing challenge such as NaNoWriMo. Would they succeed when so many writers don’t? Could one of your loved ones take on your passion? Do you think they would leave this experience with more appreciation for your work? What are your thoughts?
