Nice Pair

Some words just go well together. There are a few things that make certain terms flow right with certain others. The first is the pure presentational value of the words. They may rhyme or have alliteration or assonance built into their forms.

Other pairs work on different levels, though. I am particularly found of pairing remarkably with calm though I don’t do it very often. It’s more of a mental writing practice, I guess.

Remarkably is a fascinating word in itself because it has such strong meaning considering its understated nature. What I mean is something remarkable is worth mentioning, if you consider the core of the word. Nothing passionate about it, really. Nevertheless, the word tends to be used in cases that describe something extraordinary.

When the words remarkably and calm are paired, I feel a sense of intrigue that borders on the ironic. They seem to have a balance that appeals to the notion of calm as well as the internal conflict in remarkably. It seems as if there should be something more. They sound very interesting together, too.

Do you have any favorite word pairs? What are they? Why do you like them?

I found this a interesting. I personally like to take a combination that words like southern drawl. But I love to take the discriptive word and substitute another that paints the same picture. How about swamp drawl or gulf breeze drawl. It is fun and interesting.
