Inspiration Game

March 11th, 2008 Posted in d.challener

There’s no reason writing can’t be fun. In fact, it should be fun. But sometimes it seems like it’s easy to get mired in the more mundane aspects of writing.

Starting today I’m going to try to use about one post each month, to bring a little interactive fun back into my own writing hobby.

Today, we’ll play with Inspiration. Ideas can come from anywhere, but one piece of advice I’ve read from dozens of authors is to write what you love. By writing about your passions, you can bring enthusiasm into your writing without having to invent it.

So here’s the game…

The Spark: I’ll start by naming a hobby of mine.
The Flame: The next person will create a brief idea for a story or character, with that hobby as a key element. Be as silly or as serious as you want.
Re-Spark: Then that person will start the cycle again, by naming a hobby of their own. Make it a hobby you really love (or loved).

Now I’ll start the ball rolling with My Spark: Heraldry

Wow Dale!! Now I know what heraldry is!

The Flame: Your character seals a letter with the ring and wax of an enemy.

    The Spark: Tarot reading

The Flame: I am so skeptical of things that can’t be proven so I was amazed when I felt a strong desire to have a Tarot reading and here’s what the cards told me. (Click here to see my Tarot card reading for today)

    The Spark: Flying (Private Pilot)

The Flame: The eagle spread its mighty wings and soared into the sky, full of grace in its flight. A 9-years old boy looked up at the feathered predator and made his decision. At that very moment he decided one day, he would fly like the eagle did. he will conquer the sky realm. The boy grew up to be a media mogul. The first thing he bought when he became one of the rich and famous was a private plane. And with it, he flew himself amongst the clouds, enjoying every second in the air.

    The Spark: Singing

The Flame: Lynnette longs to be an opera singer, but there is one problem: she can’t sing. This simple fact does not stop her from walking around in full opera regalia and acting like the diva she wants to be. Her family tries to be supportive, but is secretly trying to have her committed.

    Re-spark: Photography

    The Spark: Photography

The Flame: Photography is a wonderful profession, but one that’s impossible to perfect, as in writing there’s always the possibility of changing the words, the ideas or the thoughts. In photography it is the lighting, the scene or the subject, which is open to interpretation and constantly changing. The secret to success in life is to accepting the challenge of making the world a better place because of what you have contributed to the world and in your achievements.

    The Spark: Writing

The Flame: An author has been writing for years, and taken class after class. She’s always been praised for the plots and ideas she’s come up with, but both she and her instructors have always been disappointed with the style and quality of the writing. One instructor suggests that she’s too rigid and gives her a “manual” consisting of 100 exercises typed on loose paper and poorly bound. The exercises center around giving up control of the writer’s mind. She begins the exercises, and after a week, she suddenly starts writing dozens of pages each day–every word of it excellent prose. Only when she’s done she can’t remember writing it. And, now…she can’t stop.

    The Spark: Archery

The Flame: A young woman constantly has dreams that she is the Goddess Athena on the hunt. She is a staunch monotheist and these dreams disturb her greatly. One days she spots the bow and quiver full of arrows from her dream in the window of an antique store, and is possessed of an overwhelming desire to purchase them and learn to hunt. She’s also terrified of what it might mean that she wants to give in so badly.

    Spark: Celebrity Impressions

Flame: Felicity loved to impersonate people from an early age and decided in high school that she would make a career out of it. But the going was tough as a female Elvis Impersonate and has just got tougher. Flick has just decided to file a huge law suit against a chain of casinos for sexual harrassment. Has she taken on more than even the King could swallow?

I have worked for five years now as a “fake” celebrity. I’m about to file for bankruptcy because although I look like someone famous and live much of their lifestyle I don’t have their bank balance or income opportunity. I suppose the best thing about doing this as a job is that I spread the money I have around beauticians, manicures, haircuts etc aren’t ever cheap but the freebies I can sometimes talk people into giving me even if it’s only because they think I’m someone else.

    The Spark: Celebrity Impressions

The Flame: See Amanda’s entry above, but she didn’t leave a re-spark. I would like to see this game keep going, I think it is a lot of fun.

    Re-Spark: Meditation
